Weather for Hikers

Navigating the seasons of the Valley of the Moon.

Plan Your Trek

Hiking Through the Seasons

From the red sands of Wadi Rum to the high granite peaks, the weather dictates the rhythm of your trekking adventure. Understanding the desert climate is crucial when your journey involves walking the land and sleeping under the open sky.

At Wadi Rum Bedouin Tours, we adapt our routes to the sun and wind. Whether shielding from the summer heat in deep canyons or warming up by a winter fire after a long hike, knowing what to expect ensures a safe and unforgettable expedition.

Spring & Autumn: The Golden Season

March – May & September – November are the prime months for trekkers. Temperatures are balanced (18–28°C), making it perfect for full-day hikes and scrambling up rock bridges.

  • Activity: Ideal for long-distance trekking and summit climbs (like Um Ad Dami).
  • Nature: Spring brings wildflowers to the desert floor. Autumn offers crisp, clear air.
  • Camping: Perfect conditions for sleeping outside (Bivouac).

Winter & Summer: For the Bold

Winter (Dec – Feb)

Crisp days (10–15°C) are excellent for hiking without overheating. However, nights are freezing (often below 0°C). We focus on active trekking during the day and warm fires in protected camps at night.

Summer (Jun – Aug)

Temperatures peak at 35-40°C. We adjust our schedule: hiking early morning (5 AM - 10 AM), resting in the shade during the heat, and resuming late afternoon. Nights are balmy and beautiful.

Hiker’s Packing Essentials

Hydration

The desert air dries you out fast. Bring a 2-3 liter refillable water bladder or sturdy bottles for the trail.

Footwear

Sturdy hiking boots are essential. Sand can be soft, and rocks sharp. Avoid open sandals for long treks.

Layers

Temperatures drop rapidly after sunset. Even in summer, bring a light layer. In winter, thermal wear is a must.

Safety First

Trekking Safety

  • Guided Only: The desert is vast and confusing. Always hike with a Bedouin guide who knows the terrain.
  • Sun Protection: The sun is intense. Wear a hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen at all times.
  • Flash Floods: In winter, slot canyons can be dangerous during rain. We monitor weather alerts constantly.
Responsible Travel

Leave No Trace

Respect the Desert

Pack out everything you pack in. Do not disturb wildlife or damage ancient rock art.

Water Conservation

Water is precious in Wadi Rum. Use it sparingly for washing and focus on hydration.
